Quarter 2 Science

What was the activity??

The activity was to research one of the five senses and do a presentation on it. We were put in groups before Christmas break. My group consisted of Ehsan, Connor, and I. There was a lot of information that went into the project so we divided the project up evenly between the three of us. We each did our part then later on combined them into a presentation that was presented to the class.

The Purpose

The purpose of this activity was to teach us about the each of the five senses, and their neural pathways. During the presentations we had to take notes on each of the different projects.

What I learned….

I learned the different neural pathways of touch, sight, and taste.

The neural pathway of touch begins with a stimulus. The stimulus travels through the sensory receptors to the spinal column. After it goes through the spinal column it reaches the brain. After the information it processed in the brain it goes back through the spinal column motor neurons to the motor neurons. After the motor neurons it goes back to the sensory receptors then you have a reaction. This whole process takes and 250 milliseconds.

The neural pathway of sight begins when you look at something and the image goes to your pupil. The pupil adjusts to let in a certain amount of light. The image is reflected through the lens and gets to the retina. After the retina the optic nerve receives the image, processes it and sends it to the occipital lobe, which is part of the brain. After the occipital lobe it gets sent to the motor neurons. Then comes the reaction.

The neural pathway of taste begins when your taste bud pick up a certain taste. The four types of taste buds are bitter, sweet, sour, and salty taste buds. When a taste it detected goes through the sensory neurons to the brain. When it get to the brain it processes it and sends it through the motor neurons which decides it your like the taste and should keep eating or if you don’t like it and should spit it out.

How I could have learned more/differently…

I could have learned more if I would have had my group and I would have done something like a play or something that would have allowed us to interact more and learn the info in a different way.

How does this activity relate to my goals this year??

To be completely honest this didn't really have anything to do with my goals for the year. My goals for the years were to get As and to become more organized. Seeing how as though my group and I got a 72 on this activity it didn't relate my goal of getting As. And also seeing how as though we weren't really organized and we put everything together at the last minute it didn't really realte to my goal of becoming organized.
